Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport, has not only evolved into a global phenomenon on the track but also on social media. The sport is running at full speed online, thanks in part to a striking group: influencers. But what makes Formula 1 attract so many influencers compared to other sports? And what exactly do these influencers do to bring the spectacle to a wider audience?
Just for the ‘Fame’?
Unlike sports such as football or basketball, Formula 1 is a unique mix of technological innovation, glamour, and extreme competition. These factors make the sport appealing to a broad audience, from die-hard fans to casual viewers. Influencers are the ones who manage to bridge that gap.
Caity, a Formula 1 influencer with around 31,000 followers on social media, explains:
“I started on social media in 2022 because after watching Drive to Survive, I was looking for a way to easily connect with other Formula 1 fans. My favorite driver is Daniel Ricciardo, and I wanted to meet people who share my love for him.”

Formula 1 influencers have the ability to turn complex technical information, such as race analyses or tire strategies, into digestible, understandable content for the general public. This is particularly useful in a sport that is often seen as ‘difficult to understand.’ Platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram offer influencers the perfect stage to make the sport more accessible to a new generation of fans.
“Nobody watches videos where you simply explain what happened in the race,” says Caity. “But videos explaining why a driver behaves a certain way towards another driver—like Max and Charles, for example—always perform well with fans.” This shows that fans are primarily looking for the deeper, human side of the sport.
Time to Post
The power of Formula 1 influencers lies in their versatility. They create content in various forms, from race analysis videos and backstage vlogs to fan interactions and quizzes. Many influencers gain exclusive access to teams, drivers, and events, allowing them to share unique footage that isn’t available through official channels.
“I started off quite anonymously,” Caity shares. “I didn’t show my face on camera until I had 10,000 followers.” Influencers like Caity take their followers along on the emotional rollercoaster of racing. They don’t just talk about the technical aspects but also about the human stories: driver rivalries, strategic team decisions, and even the lifestyles of the drivers. This makes the sport far more accessible to people who wouldn’t typically be hardcore racing fans.
How Teams Take Advantage
Teams quickly recognized the potential of influencers. While traditional marketing often feels static and corporate, influencers can create a more authentic and dynamic connection with the audience. This makes them valuable allies in the communication and marketing strategies of F1 teams.
“Influencers give teams a way to directly connect with a younger and often more engaged audience. By collaborating with these social media stars, teams can create content that truly resonates with fans,” says Caity. “For example, Red Bull Racing frequently partners with influencers who share content before, during, and after races. This not only increases visibility for the team but also makes fans feel like they’re really part of the journey.”

The ‘Wow’ Factor
Unlike many other sports, where influencers mainly focus on lifestyle or short entertainment moments, Formula 1 influencers have to go deeper. The sport requires a certain level of knowledge. Formula 1 has built a reputation as a sport that isn’t easily understood without some background information. And it’s precisely the influencers who bridge the gap between the sport’s complex technical side and its pure entertainment value.
Additionally, they tap into the culture surrounding Formula 1: the glamour of race weekends, the tension between rival teams, and the global fanbase that connects every race weekend. They embody the passion that fans feel for their favorite drivers and teams, making them an essential part of the fan experience.
Formula 1 influencers come in all shapes and sizes: from tech experts who dive deep into the data to lifestyle influencers who share the VIP experience, and even meme creators who highlight the humorous and lighthearted side of the sport. This versatility ensures that there is an influencer for every type of fan, striking the perfect tone.
The Future with Influencers
The influence of influencers in Formula 1 continues to grow. With the rapid rise of social media, the sport is becoming increasingly accessible to new audiences. The unique mix of technical depth, adrenaline, and human storytelling makes Formula 1 a perfect breeding ground for influencers to thrive.
Formula 1 is no longer just a sport for hardcore fans; it has become a global entertainment phenomenon, and influencers play a crucial role in this transformation. They are the link between the technical world of the sport and the social media experience that brings fans closer to their heroes. Teams would do well to continue embracing influencers because the digital highway is where the future of fan engagement lies.
Whether it’s an Instagram post of an influencer with a driver or a TikTok explaining the details of a race, one thing is certain: influencers have more than earned their place in the world of Formula 1—and their impact will only continue to grow.
